Private Pilot License - PPL (A)

This presents you the requirements, privileges and conditions to obtain a private pilot license aeroplane.

Minimum age
(JAR-FCL 1.100)


Medical Fitness (JAR-FCL 1.105)

An applicant for a PPL(A) shall hold a valid Class 1 or Class 2 medical certificate. In order to exercise the privileges of a PPL(A) a valid Class 1 or Class 2 medical certificate shall be held.

Privileges and conditions
(JAR-FCL 1.110)

1. Privileges. (JAR-FCL 1.110 (a))

Subject to any other conditions specified in JARs, the privileges of the holder of a PPL(A) are to act, but not for remuneration, as pilot-in-command or co-pilot of any aeroplane engaged in non-revenue flights.

   
2. Conditions.
(JAR-FCL 1.110 (b))

(1) An applicant for a PPL(A) who has complied with the conditions specified in 
    -
JAR-FCL 1.100 (minimum age),
    -
JAR-FCL 1.105 (medical fitness), 
    -
JAR-FCL 1.120 (experience and crediting) ,
    -
JAR-FCL 1.125(a) (training course - general) and (b) (training course - flight instruction),
    -
JAR-FCL 1.130 (Theoretical Knowledge Examination) and
    -
JAR-FCL 1.135 (skill)
shall have fulfilled the requirements for the issue of a PPL(A) including at least the class/type rating for the aeroplane used in the skill test.

(2) If the privileges of the licence are to be exercised at night, the holder shall have complied with JAR-FCL 1.125(c).

Experience and Crediting (JAR-FCL 1.120)

An applicant for a PPL(A) shall have completed at least 
    - 45 hours flight time as a pilot of aeroplanes; 
    - a total of 5 hours of this 45 hours may have been completed in a FNPT or a flight simulator.

 Holders of pilot licenses or equivalent privileges for helicopters, microlight helicopters, gyroplanes and microlights having fixed wings and moveable aerodynamic control surfaces acting in all three dimensions, gliders, self-sustaining gliders or self-launching gliders may be credited with 10% of their total flight time as pilot-in-command in such aircraft up to a maximum of 10 hours towards a PPL(A).

Training Course (JAR-FCL 1.125)

   
1.(JAR-FCL 1.125 (a))

An applicant for a PPL(A) shall complete at an FTO or an accepted registered facility the required instruction in accordance with the syllabus as set out by the FTO.

     2. Flight instruction. (JAR-FCL 1.125 (b))

 

    3. Night qualification. (JAR-FCL 1.125 (c))

If the privileges of the license are to be exercised at night, 
    - at least five additional hours flight time in aeroplanes shall be completed at night comprising
    - 3 hours of dual instruction including
                - at least 1 hour of cross-country navigation and
                - five solo take-offs and five solo full-stop landings. 

This qualification will be endorsed on the license.

Theoretical Knowledge Examination
(JAR-FCL 1.130)

The applicant for a PPL(A) shall have demonstrated to the Authority a level of theoretical knowledge appropriate to the privileges granted to the holder of a PPL(A). 
The theoretical knowledge examinations will cover the following subjects:

    - Air Law and ATC Procedures 
    - Aircraft General Knowledge
    - Flight Performance and Planning
    - Human Performance and Limitations
    - Meteorology
    - Navigation
    - Operational Procedures
    - Principles of Flight
    - Communications

Skill
(JAR-FCL 1.135)

An applicant for a PPL(A) shall have demonstrated the ability to perform, as pilot-in-command of an aeroplane, with a degree of competency appropriate to the privileges granted to the holder of a PPL(A).

The applicant shall demonstrate the ability to:
    - operate the aeroplane within its limitations;
    - complete all manoeuvres with smoothness and accuracy;
    - exercise good judgment and airmanship;
    - apply aeronautical knowledge; and
    - maintain control of the aeroplane at all times in such a manner that the successful outcome of a
      procedure or maneuver is never seriously in doubt.

The skill test shall be taken within six months of completing the flight instruction (see
JAR-FCL 1.125(a)).
